Explainer videos are a great way to reduce questions at scale. Here's how to make a great demo!

We’ve all had that experience where people keeping emailing you the same question every week. The question is always, “How do I do this one thing?” You have two choices. You can continue to reply to the these recurring emails again and again or you can create a visual explainer that guides someone through the process in question that can be shared with the click of a button.

This is what happened with the office of professional development at USCF. They had a system for employers to post jobs but there were a few potential places where the user could get stuck. It only made sense to create a walk though that could be shared with anyone to ease the process of posting.

A key element for a quick explainer is to have a friendly face at the start rather than just recorded computer screen. This doesn’t have to be a big production. In fact you can usually get it done in about a hour from setup to completion. This introduction from the person who is guiding you through the process adds a level of polish to your training that inspires confidence in the user.

Once the intro is recorded, its time to record the screen for the demo. There are a couple of key elements you’ll need to get this right. The first is ample time for the instructor to record several takes. Usually the first take is a little muddled. By the second or third try the instructor has a nice flow and the language is smooth. The second thing is having a quality microphone for recording. You can have a very visually clear demo but if the audio is bad the learner might lose interest. The third element that is critical is the edit. Not only does the content need to be edited for clarity but visual guides need to be placed on screen so that learner knows where to look. If they aren’t being guided they might give up and start emailing you again!

There are a lot of factors that make a walk through video effective. As a master teacher and video producer I can make sure all bases are covered so that you have a professional video with a clear message that is easy to share with your audience.
